10 Reasons Why Women Need To Do Resistance Training East Bay

 

I have a been in the fitness industry now for 10 years.  I have 3 national certifications as well as a B.S. & Master's degree in Kinesiology. For some reason when I speak to my mom about the importance of resistance training, she never takes my advice. She thinks that I don't know anything about fitness even though I spent years in college learning about exercise science. I think it's because my mother is 30-plus years older than me and believes she knows more than me on every subject.

I think we all have parents that think they are know-it-alls.

Recently, my wife and I convinced my mother that she needs to start exercising and incorporate a resistance training program, but she still didn't listen to me.  It was my wife that was the one to convince her, not me.

When my mother asked why she needs to start lifting weights and not just do cardio, this is what we told her:

1) Burn More Fat:  Resistance training will keep your metabolism elevated throughout the day as opposed to cardio training, only elevates your metabolism for about 60-90 minutes.

2) Change The Shape Of Your Body: Weight training can change your body's composition by creating new curves and help avoid the "middle-age spread."

3) Boost Metabolism: As women age (starting at 40 years of age) lean muscle decreases which will slow down metabolism. When most women diet and only do cardio training, 25% of the weight loss is from muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism becomes, thus burning more calories throughout the day.

4) Increase Strength & Confidence:  Resistance training can improve functional fitness which will make everday life easier. Feeling strong and healthy is a feeling of empowerment, which increases self-esteem and confidence.

5) Stronger Bones:  Weight-bearing exercises strengthens bones and prevents osteoporosis.

6) Decreases Depression:  While exercising, endorphins are released and can lessen the symptoms of depression.

7) Improves Athletic Performance:  If you play any recreational sports during the week or weekend, incorporating a resistance training program will improve athletic performance.

8) Prevents Injury:  As women get older, bones become weak and muscle coordination becomes problematic. Resistance training will strengthen bones, tendons, and ligaments, which will decrease the chances of falling or tearing a muscle during daily activity.

9) Improves Your Heart:  Weight training can help increase HDL cholesterol (bad) LDL cholesterol while lowering your blood pressure.

10) Prevents Diabetes:  The more muscle you have, the more efficient your body is in removing glucose from the blood.
